Home working should be an option for plenty of employees because "50 per cent of jobs can be done partly from home".
This is the view of Peter Thomson, director of research at the Telework Association, who said that his company had thwarted the view that some roles cannot be done from home.
"I think part of the prejudice is a feeling that because it can't be done permanently from home, it can't be done from home at all," he said.
He added, however, that most jobs can be done remotely - perhaps with the aid of remote access software - even if they are considered to be "hands on".
Philip Flaxton, chief executive officer of Work Wise UK, recently told Silicon.com that one of the biggest barriers to home working is managers fear their employees might not be doing their role.
This "lack of trust of staff" leads to fewer people being offered the option of flexible working, possibly with the use of remote server access.
