Over the coming months and years, there is likely to be an increasing interest in the accounts of public sector bodies, after the government suggested people should scrutinise these more closely.
Malcolm Prowle, professor of business performance at Nottingham Business School, has written a piece for the Guardian in which he explores the importance of submitting accounts that can be clearly understood by everybody.
At the moment, many documents filed are irrelevant to "ordinary people" and questions have been raised about whether organisations even understand their own results.
One way to perhaps ensure greater clarity is to invest in accounting software, which can produce more accurate and readable financial statistics.
Mr Prowle said until bodies work out who reads their accounts and why they are of use, the expensive process of putting them together could be considered a waste of money.
Another benefit of accounting software is the potential to use it to ensure irregularities do not occur, with AAP recently telling how this problem had hit electrical company Hastie.
