A significant proportion of British businesses have highlighted the assistance they require via accounting software as vital to them.

Research by unbiased.co.uk has found more than a fifth (21 per cent) of firms believe their accountant is their most important advisor.

They suggested that the words of the financial experts can play a crucial role in the running of their companies, with 48 per cent admitting this has saved them money.

Some organisations may wish to become even more efficient by adopting their own accounting software to perform similar functions.

In addition to this, 47 per cent of bosses said those using accounting software – such as SAP Business One – had managed to help them understand the country's tax system.

Karen Barrett, chief executive of the website, said: "Setting up and running a business can be time consuming, especially in the current economic climate and an accountant can offer not just valuable advice but also free up your time."

Accountant in Bankruptcy recently revealed accounting software could be of use to Scottish firms, as it found more than 5,000 went out of business in the first quarter of 2011.
