‘Big year’ for desktop virtualisation

7th January

Category: Virtualisation

Desktop virtualisation is likely to make important strides forward this year, it has been suggested.

Writing for Network Computing, Randy George noted that the technology has not yet gained mainstream support, despite the ease with which server virtualisation benefits can be transferred to the desktop.

He explained that acceptance has been slowed by difficulties in streaming graphically intensive applications over remote viewing protocols, but developers expect these problems to be addressed in 2010.

Harry Labana of Citrix was quoted as saying this will be a "breakout year" for desktop virtualisation and Mr George observed that it may well "take off along the same trajectory as server virtualisation".

It comes after industry expert Neil Barton predicted that server virtualisation software will become more prevalent over the next 12 months.

Firms will be seeking to benefit from the advantages in terms of flexibility and cost reductions that such systems can offer, he said.
