Investing in enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is something businesses only have to tackle every five to seven years.

The result of this is that very few become experts on the matter and, in most cases, the rules change so dramatically in such a period that previous experiences are of no great use.

Consultancy firm Eval-Source said that it is wise to ask for help prior to securing any purchase.

It suggested there are "too many choices" and an "information overload" is common, making the choice a difficult one.

One key decision is whether to secure an all-in-one ERP system or to integrate various pieces of equipment.

Traditional providers such as SAP offer state-of-the-art cloud solutions that are sure to impress any business leader, but taking a little time to select the right one will pay off in the long run.

SAP recently announced that, instead of one huge upgrade, it is to offer customers a quarterly improvement to their software.
