Companies should always prepare thoroughly before they consider making changes to their enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, it has been claimed
Writing for Sys-Con Media, Eric Kimberling noted that customisation can often increase the complexity of platforms so it is imperative that an organisation prioritises what its aims are for making the alterations.
He added: "Clearly defined business requirements will ensure you choose the right enterprise solution during your ERP software selection process."
According to Mr Kimberling, it is also important to understand the difference between customisation and configuration.
The former requires direct changes to the source code, he explained, so firms need to make sure they are technically skilled enough to be able to do this effectively.
Organisations were also advised that many system faults will only require the platform to be reconfigured.
IT Research scientist Andrew McAfee, contributing to the Financial Times, recently described ERP systems as extremely beneficial to productivity.
