Firms are at risk of allowing their enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to become outdated in today’s business world.
This is the suggestion of Dale Vile of Freeform Dynamics, writing for the Register, who said most platforms currently in place were installed during the 1990s.
Some software could be up to 15 years old, he explained, which means they may not be as modern as they should be.
"Given that technology and associated ideas have developed significantly in the intervening period, it begs the question of how well these systems have kept up," Mr Vile commented.
Organisations need to assess how well their existing ERP system is able to meet fluctuating business needs, he added, particularly in the current economic climate.
The real-time benefits of this kind of technology were recently praised by India-based IT firm eresource Infotech, which described the ability to monitor multiple modules simultaneously and at all times as its biggest advantage.
