British businesses need to introduce workforce mobility schemes and utilise contemporary technology - such as remote access software - to overcome future congestion on the country’s roads, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has claimed.
A survey by the organisation revealed four-fifths of firms in the UK consider such transport networks as "vital" to their operations.
Furthermore, 96 per cent of enterprises feel that the next government should tackle rush-hour traffic as a priority.
"Simply building more roads will not solve the problem," the CBI said. "Companies should adopt more flexible patterns of work and encourage staff to make use of modern communications technologies."
According to the lobbying body, workforce mobility can help corporations to stagger clocking in and clocking out times for their personnel to combat commuting problems.
Last week, the Federation of Small Businesses called on the government to ramp up high-speed broadband connectivity to rural companies and their workers to boost productivity levels - something that could help them to develop remote access practices.
