Citibank is to utilise home working to safeguard the jobs of staff at one of its call centres in Albuquerque, which is due for closure.

The major US employer said that around 700 employees will switch to "work at home" positions, using remote access services to carry out their responsibilities.

It said in a statement: "We reached this decision as part of an ongoing evaluation to find ways to increase the efficiency and cost effectiveness of our consumer banking operations while giving employees flexible work options."

Employees will start to switch to their new remote access positions "over the next few weeks", with an aim for the site to be vacated by mid-August.

Earlier this month, a survey from Citrix revealed that people are increasingly open to the prospect of home working, saying that provisions which allow staff to work outside of the office are "the new normal".

It also revealed that a majority of staff members believe they are more productive when working at home.
