Campuses around the world could be set to benefit from increased virtualisation options provided by Citrix.
According to the organisation, it will be offering its XenDesktop 4 program to a range of academic institutions through a new licensing option that will enable universities and similar organisations to take advantage of the software for around $9 (£5.50) per student.
Using XenDesktop 4 can allow facilities to maximise their flexibility by providing virtualisation solutions to a number of devices used by learners, the company added.
Commenting on the move, chief information officer at US-based Scottsdale Community College Dustin Fennell said he is "excited" to see Citrix providing a service specifically to higher education.
He remarked: "I am especially encouraged with the campus-wide site licensing. This will allow our college to implement virtualisation strategies in innovative ways without having to worry about licensing limits."
Mark Templeton, president and chief executive officer at Citrix Systems, last month said that virtualisation will revolutionise how people work in the future.
