Implementing Citrix XenDesktop and Citrix XenServer can help a company to make significant energy savings, it has been claimed.

George Thornton, Montgomery Independent School District (ISD) network operations manager, said that introducing the systems at his organisation caused it to save tens of thousands of dollars each year.

"The expense of powering and cooling our datacentre was costing us as much as it was to outfit it," he remarked, adding that Citrix XenServer has enabled the Montgomery ISD to reduce the number of physical servers required by a ratio of ten to one.

According to Mr Thornton, desktop virtualisation has facilitated numerous other hardware savings as it extends the life cycle of existing PCs by allowing an increased use of thin clients.

"Changes like these can make a huge difference in the bottom line," he explained.

Citrix recently revealed research that showed virtualisation is becoming increasingly popular in academic institutions, with 82 per cent of 200 bodies polled reporting an interest in the technology.ADNFCR-2732-ID-19514987-ADNFCR
