Cloud computing ‘offers high levels of security’

Businesses have been advised to pay no attention to "scare stories" about the security of cloud computing, as the technology has been described as supremely safe.

Phil Wainewright, UK vice-chairman of EuroCloud, explained that some people are put off by tales that are no more than unfounded rumours.

He said there is very little chance of servers operating in the cloud being accessed by outside parties and a remote likelihood of material being taken.

"Cloud providers have got firewalls and a lot of security in place and in most cases, the security that you're getting from a cloud provider is probably greater than the security you've got in-house," Mr Wainewright stated.

He added that cloud computing users should remind staff to keep their login details secure, as this is perhaps the greatest risk.

Seth Robinson, one of the authors of the CompTIA second annual Trends in Cloud Computing report, recently said that in the future firms will spend more time deciding how much responsibility they are willing to take for data security.
