Cloud computing is set to continue its rapid rise in popularity among business users over the next five years.

Research body Gartner has published its top ten predictions for the future of the IT industry, which include a forecast for a bright future for the technology.

It suggested that more than 50 per cent of Global 1000 companies are set to store data in the cloud by the end of 2016.

At the moment, it is thought that more than 20 per cent have already started to use a hybrid platform in order to save sensitive information.

Many are combining the use of a cloud-based solution with their continued reliance on physical equipment in the workplace.

But with the economy putting pressure on firms, a growing number will turn to public and/or private cloud computing products in the next half-decade.

The International Data Corporation recently named cloud technology as one of several drivers of IT spending growth in 2012.
