Education bodies – from schools to colleges and universities – have been advised they will come to rely on cloud computing.
Jonathan Bishop, chair for The Centre for Research into Online Communities and e-learning Systems at Swansea University, said the cloud has a significant role to play in education over the years to come.
He put forward the Bologna Process as an example of when the technology will be particularly useful.
The Bologna Process is the scheme that allows students to transfer between universities – resulting in all of the data and grades details associated with them also having to be moved.
"Cloud computing will become essential as the mobile platforms for e-learning become widespread. The holding of e-learning content in the cloud will enable faster deployment and sharing of resources," stated Mr Bishop.
Dr Mick Grierson, computing lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London, recently said cloud computing is set to rise to such prominence that it will change the way desktops look forever more.
