Cloud computing ‘to create 14m jobs’

28th May

Category: Virtualisation

Spending on cloud computing around the world will be so significant in the years to come that some 14 million jobs will be created as a direct result of the technology.

New research by the International Data Corporation (IDC) has found more than 200,000 of these positions are likely to be formed in the UK.

Its conclusions are similar to those revealed in a recent report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research, which predicted 289,000 jobs would be forthcoming in Britain as a consequence of the move to the cloud.

John Gantz, senior vice-president at the IDC, said China, India and other emerging markets are all sure to benefit greatly from the trend. Meanwhile, 1.2 million of the roles will be created in the US and Canada.

The benefits of the cloud were recently summed up by Tiny Haynes, a research director at Gartner, who told the FT Connected Business podcast the technology improves flexibility and scalability for users.
