Cloud computing to dominate business IT by 2014

The rise of cloud computing will continue to be so dramatic that it will make traditional PCs effectively redundant by 2014, new research has claimed.

A new report published by Gartner has suggested the cloud will become the dominant form of business computing in just two years' time.

Employees will increasingly work from tablets, smartphones and other devices rather than computers.

The result of this will be a "new level" of flexibility that will allow businesspeople to choose how and where they work based on the strengths of the options open to them.

Several reasons to invest in the cloud were recently given by Dr Graeme Codrington, futurist and speaker at TomorrowToday, who commented on the boost it gives to functionality, applications and storage within a business.

Steve Kleynhans, research vice-president at Gartner, said: "Emerging cloud services will become the glue that connects the web of devices that users choose to access during the different aspects of their daily life."
