The number of companies using cloud computing solutions will more than double by 2015, according to new research published by IBM.

In addition to this prediction, the body noted the amount of businesses that are said to use the technology "substantially" will increase from a current level of 13 per cent to three times this figure in the same period.

Business and technology executives around the world were interviewed and many revealed their firm is becoming more reliant on the cloud.

Research group IDC recently said one of the benefits of a wider use of the cloud is the fact that it tends to fuel innovation within organisations.

In response to the IBM survey, 90 per cent of respondents admitted cloud computing is already a part of their working day or will be within two years.

"Companies are starting to understand - cloud isn't just about gaining efficiencies and cost savings; it's about driving the kind of fundamental innovation that provides lasting marketplace advantage," explained IBM's global strategy consulting leader Saul Berman.
