Cloud-based accounting software could be set to see a spike in demand among smaller ventures.

According to the Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA), customers now expect to get a certain degree of "flexibility and scalability" from small and medium-sized enterprises.

This, it stated, can be provided by cloud and SaaS-based systems.

Rhianna Collier, vice president of the SIIA's software division, described the adoption of these types of technologies as "viable" options for businesses.

"In fact, in today's economy it is becoming a necessity", she commented.

Ms Collier noted that firms in all industries can benefit from using SaaS solutions and cloud computing - rather than just those in the IT sector.

However, she warned that businesses which fail to keep up with these technological advances could struggle to expand in the future.

This comes after software sales and marketing coach Terry Forsey observed that automating accounting procedures is proving an extremely popular option with larger companies.
