The rise of cloud computing is expected to continue on its steep upward curve and change the way businesses operate their desktops for years to come.
That is the view of Dr Mick Grierson, computing lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London, who said he expects desktops to remain in use but "not in the same way".
He noted there is little point in using a large server and allowing it to take up space in an office.
"You really don't need to do that - you can just hire a rack and the rack can sit at a server farm and you can just rent it," Dr Grierson stated.
The expert suggested this is the future and, for just a few pounds a month, is sure to put traditional desktops to the back of people's minds.
Phil Wainewright, vice-president of EuroCloud, is another industry insider to have praised cloud computing in recent weeks, describing it as the norm for the majority of businesses.
