Cloud computing is one of several technologies that is set to fuel IT spending over the course of 2012, an expert body has predicted.
The International Data Corporation (IDC) said a switch to the cloud will appeal in the near future and expects many firms to divert their resources towards achieving it.
It named mobile computing, analytics and social networking as the other features due to contribute to growth.
At the moment, these – along with cloud computing – are said to account for 18 per cent of IT spending, but this will increase to more than 80 per cent by 2020.
The IDC also identified VMware as a company that is likely to become a more significant player in the industry over the coming months.
Research body Gartner recently suggested one country where cloud computing is due to take off is India, with the solution described as an "urgent and compelling" force.
