Several colleges and education institutions in the US have opted to install VMware products in a bid to improve the learning experience they offer to students.
In particular, VMware View and VMware ThinApp have been selected, with an increase in student access to tuition applications noted as one of the major benefits they create.
By adopting the virtualisation technology, schools and colleges can also reduce logon times by 90 per cent and the set-up of computers now takes eight minutes rather than eight hours.
Installing VMware has triggered a notable improvement in energy-efficiency too, with many of the institutions reporting a significant downturn in power consumption and, as a result, costs.
Lee Spaniol, director of information systems and services at Lake Land College in Illinois, stated: "Moving to thin clients to deliver VMware View virtual desktops reduced electricity costs and doubled the lifespan of desktop PCs ... That adds up to real savings."
VMware recently announced its profits in the second quarter of 2011 almost tripled.
