Firms planning to implement enterprise resource planning (ERP) software have been advised to carry out an assessment of their needs.
Technology expert John Hoebler told Government Technology that each feature should be assessed on a number of factors, including the time and cost they would take to implement.
By combining these with a breakdown of the advantages they offer, a cost-benefit analysis can be drawn up, allowing the modules to be ranked in order of importance.
"It also can provide a ranking to determine how to efficiently deploy the resources you have on hand," said Mr Hoebler.
The specialist also suggested that ERP systems' optimisation assessments should be updated on an annual basis at least.
Earlier this week, the publication observed that officials in the US city of Portland have benefited from a switch to ERP software - which replaced technology first introduced in 1991 that was likened to something from the 1970s.
