An increasing number of companies are investing in virtualisation to help them save money in the long-term, it has been suggested.

In an article for Computerworld, Julia King claimed research carried out by the website has shown the technologies that firms are piloting or beta-testing include both server and desktop virtualisation.

And these moves are designed to help manage flatter budgets and slash outgoings, the expert noted.

Marie Mouchet, chief information officer at energy organisation Southern Company, said: "We have a lease programme for our desktops, which we rotate every few years. As they expire, we'll be evaluating moving to virtual desktops."

She added the enterprise has desktop virtualisation pilots underway and making the technology system-wide is a real possibility.

A recent study carried out by Gartner found virtualisation is helping drive strong server shipments.

The report discovered a total of 2.1 million servers were shipped in the second quarter of 2010 - a 27.1 per cent increase on that recorded a year earlier.
