Companies reminded to back-up cloud computing systems

Category: Virtualisation

The business world has been so quick and keen to deploy cloud computing systems that it may have forgotten to ensure it has adequate back-up to these.

According to business consultant Andrea Simmons, writing for BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, a recent case sums up the problem perfectly.

It noted that online retailer Amazon found its European cloud services knocked out by a lightning strike in Dublin, Ireland, in early August, resulting in its web portal being out of action for 24 hours.

BCS noted this can be taken as a "wake-up call", as an entire day of being unable to trade has a huge impact on a company.

In Amazon's case, it was the consequence not only of the lightning strike, but also of having no competent back-up system in place to deal with an unforeseen circumstance.

Cloud computing was recently revealed to be a great environmental option in research by the Carbon Disclosure Project, reported by IBTimes, as it is said to cut carbon emissions.
