Firms looking to integrate enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, such as SAP Business One, need to evaluate their current infrastructures carefully, one expert has suggested.
Research director of dynamic application ecosystems at Ovum Summit Warren Wilson said that "the most important first step" is to assess the company's existing capabilities, IT World Canada reports.
He asked: "Exactly what do you need this to do, what problem are you trying to solve, and what resources do you have or can (you) hire?"
According to Mr Wilson, targeting a specific area of the organisation that managers are trying to improve is a fundamental aspect of picking the right ERP system.
It is amazing how many businesses approach the implementation of a platform without adequately tackling this initial step, he added.
Earlier this month, IDG reported comments made by Liz Benison of IT consultancy Capgemini that the benefits of ERP software have been recognised for a number of years.
