Every company needs to be considering a switch to virtualisation, an industry expert has suggested.
Philip Dawson, from business technology research firm Gartner, has remarked that virtual platforms, such as Citrix XenServer, are the number one software for firms to be investing in.
The specialist noted virtualisation is the top driver for chief information officers, partly because it can enable other technological directions such as green IT.
Mr Dawson remarked he expected the current figure of 30 per cent of virtual environment workloads to double or triple within the next two or three years.
He advised firms: "There is no point when you are consolidating doing the measurement later, you need to do it upfront - do storage, management and consolidation and then you rationalise."
David Sood, of IEEE, recently noted virtualisation software may be able to help enterprises become more environmentally-friendly as stations such as laptops require less power than desktops.
