Could ERP software help retailers overcome red tape?

The adoption of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software by British retailers could be one way for them to become leaner, increasingly effective and more profitable.

Justin King, chief executive of Sainsbury's, has become the latest industry figurehead to slam the rules and regulations firms must deal with in the trading world.

Speaking to the Independent, he suggested that red tape is one of the most significant obstacles retailers are being asked to overcome.

"Many of our town centres now have transport, planning and parking restrictions and one-way systems and red tape," Mr King stated.

While time and resources may be taken up concentrating on the problems presented by the supermarket chief, one way to become more efficient and make savings behind the scenes is to invest in ERP software.

Earlier this month, Computing revealed the results of a poll that showed bosses who have implemented ERP software reported a range of benefits, including decreasing finance costs and improved cash management.
