Vast quantities of data in the UK's science and research sector – described as the world leader – could be organised more efficiently with enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has published its International Comparative Performance of the UK Research Base 2011 report, which shows that the country is home to the most lucrative research market on the planet.

Per pound spent on research and development, Britain attracts more citations than any other nation.

One reason for the country's strong position is the high quality and efficiency it is able to offer – something that could be boosted with ERP software.

"We are committed to maintaining this leading position and building on the UK's fantastic record of academic and scientific achievement," said David Willetts, minister for universities and science.

A report by Nick Castellina, senior research associate of the Aberdeen Group's Enterprise Applications research team, recently concluded that one area in which ERP software is a must is financial departments within firms.
