Desktop virtualisation “breaking the pattern”

Organisations could be about to benefit from a change in the way hardware is purchased because of desktop virtualisation, it has been suggested.

Writing for Forbes, Lee Gomes and Taylor Buley noted that with the arrival of the Windows 7 operating system this would usually mean widespread upgrades of PCs.

"Desktop virtualisation, however, threatens to break that pattern," they stated, adding that businesses may now be able to get by on a virtualised PC for a fraction of the cost of a new system.

"The corporate customer gets the promise of lower support costs plus the security and simplicity that come from having data in one carefully guarded place," the pair explained.

According to Mr Gomes and Mr Buley, maintenance is far less expensive running this kind of network, with the extra bonus that identifying and fixing problems is made simpler through centralisation.

The flexibility benefits of this kind of technology were recently highlighted by Virtualization Review contributor Calvin Hsu, who described it as "powerful".ADNFCR-2732-ID-19517475-ADNFCR
