An expert at leading desktop virtualisation solutions provider VMware has outlined his beliefs for the coming months, suggesting the industry is set to welcome a "new wave" of technological advances.

Steve Herrod, chief technology officer at the company, told Forbes he is expecting a "rapid increase" in the number of firms with a desire to harness all of their data.

He went on to reveal he is forecasting a number of new applications are likely to be released to "leverage this insight".

"These apps will trigger new architectural foundations as well. We're already seeing the rise of in-memory databases," Mr Herrod noted.

Among the benefits for firms that invest in such technology will be a superior service and the knowledge that they have spent their time and money in a wiser fashion.

Kenneth van Surksum, chief editor of news site Virtualization.info, recently said one of the key changes in 2012 will be a move towards management products supporting numerous virtualisation platforms.
