Desktop virtualisation ‘emerging as a cost-cutting device’

Desktop virtualisation software, such as Citrix XenDesktop, is beginning to gain ground on other platforms because of its ability to cut costs, it has been suggested.

Writing for the Daily Advertiser, technology management consultant Ben Blanchard noted that for an office containing 100 people, hardware expenses can be "enormous".

He remarked: "Now more than ever, with businesses cutting costs at every turn, it is time to truly analyse the paradigm of one user to one computer."

According to Mr Blanchard, many organisations underutilise their computers, with a number often sitting idle drawing energy but not being used.

Virtualisation is very reminiscent of the pre-desktop days, he added, where the majority of office environments had multiple thin clients, entitled "dumb terminals" connected to a central terminal.

Earlier this month, contributing to Network Computing, Randy George stated that desktop virtualisation programs are likely to experience a very successful 2010, due to increased take-up.ADNFCR-2732-ID-19557563-ADNFCR
