Safety is one of the main benefits to have arisen from the development of desktop virtualisation.
That is the suggestion of Forbes, which explained that the technology is being used by researchers aiming to prevent attacks by viruses and malware.
Such people need to understand how the problem has affected a computer, the news source explained, with changes to virtual machines able to be discarded so they are restored to their initial state.
Robert McArdle, a threat researcher based in Ireland, was quoted as saying of desktop virtualisation: "It’s definitely helped us a lot. You can click a button and the whole machine goes to the way it was before you installed the malware."
Writing for CIO last week, Joab Jackson suggested that VMware is leading the sector, with fellow provider Citrix closely following as the second-biggest player in the virtualisation market - the latter holding the edge in terms of desktop applications.
