Desktop virtualisation specialist VMware contributes to US school savings

Desktop virtualisation specialist VMware has played its part in an upgrade to an IT platform in a US school.

Oak Hills, in western Ohio, turned to the company when it found itself in a battle to provide the infrastructure required to support explosive growth in mobile and laptop usage.

Faced with budget constraints, the education institution required a solution that was able to help it provide lessons and centrally-managed desktops to students at a reasonable cost.

Vittorio Viarengo, vice-president of end-user computing at VMware, which teamed up with NetApp and Cisco to deliver the system upgrade, said Oak Hill is now a "fantastic example" of what can be done on a budget.

"The net result can be a more productive learning environment for students and teachers, all provided with fewer required resources, time and money," he stated.

David Wright, vice-president of technology services at VMware, told a Software Industry Research Board roundtable recently that cloud computing is having a large effect on desktop virtualisation ambitions within organisations.
