The digital world looks set to embrace virtualisation software in the coming years, a survey has suggested.
Conducted by Illuminas, a strategic research firm, the poll revealed that almost two-thirds of those questioned believe such products will be the number one networking investment over the next five years.
The data - which took into account the views of nearly 1,000 individuals working within the industry from across 79 countries - showed that these platforms could be crucial for small and medium-sized enterprises that are looking to keep their IT costs down.
Other trends that are driving innovation in the sector that were highlighted in the study included risk management, unified communications, video and real-time collaboration.
Last week, John Dix, an industry expert writing for Network World, revealed that the flexibility of desktop virtualisation means that firms need to seriously start to consider purchasing such software as there are tools available to suit every business need.
