The implementation of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system should be viewed as a long-term project rather than a quick fix, it has been suggested.
Writing for the MIT Sloan Management Review, Albert Segars and Dave Chatterjee noted the installation can take time, but added "the potential payback is great".
The expert duo provided firms considering an ERP system rollout with a few tips to consider before the deployment gets underway.
They recommended the transition be viewed as an organisational transformation, rather than a simple IT project.
"Make sure everyone in your organization understands the nature and goals of the ERP initiative, particularly in the early stages," the pair observed.
They added companies should focus on changing the business activities that matter most to them.
In a recent article for The Journal, Evan Tassistro noted one of the primary benefits of an ERP rollout is that it can help drive down administration costs.
