An enterprise resource planning (ERP) system is the current top IT investment a firm can make, new research has suggested.

According to Computer Economics’ Technology Trends 2010/2011 report, ERP is the most mature technology across enterprises of all sizes.

The research analyst conducted the survey between January and April this year and it involved 210 senior IT managers from large, midsize and small firms.

“About two-thirds of all organisations in the study have ERP systems and about half of the organisations are investing in these systems,” the authors wrote.

They added such businesses are doing so by either expanding the capabilities of the applications they already have in place, or by implementing an ERP system for the first time.
