An implementation of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system can bring many advantages to manufacturing companies of all sizes, new research has found.
According to a study carried out by the Aberdeen Group - a market intelligence provider - ERP systems provide the necessary infrastructure that forms the transactional and operational systems of record for firms.
Cindy Jutras, vice-president of the research organisation, commented: "ERP has truly become a mature business application."
The investigation discovered an ERP implementation can cut administrative costs by 18 per cent, as well as slashing operational prices by 20 per cent.
On-time shipments can be improved by 17 per cent, while internal schedule compliance can be bettered by 18 per cent.
Such benefits can save businesses tens of thousands or even millions of pounds, the researchers observed.
Thomas Tan, director of solution marketing at SAP, recently remarked ERP systems can help a firm coordinate its supply and demand on a more organised and efficient level.
