Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software has a number of benefits that help small to medium-sized enterprises (SME) grow, new research has suggested.

According to a new report - entitled ERP in SME: Fuelling Growth and Profits - from Aberdeen Group, the best-performing small-scale businesses are 50 per cent more likely to have real-time visibility on the status of all their processes.

In addition, it noted the importance of efficient, versatile and stable infrastructure when attempting to meet the expectation of future growth.

Commenting on the report, vice-president research fellow and group director Cindy Jutras said: "[ERP] can indeed be a strategic weapon."

She added the software can be used to provide a "necessary infrastructure" that is the basis for "the transactional system of record" and is a source of cost savings, streamlining and operational improvements.

Aberdeen Group is based in Boston, US and offers research and analysis of information technology and products.
