Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is invaluable in a number of environments, but none more so than within the financial departments of companies.

A new report by Nick Castellina, senior research associate of the Aberdeen Group's Enterprise Applications research team, has examined the way in which the technology can benefit firms.

The study, entitled ERP's Impact on Financial Executives: Visibility Leads to Stability, makes it clear that ERP software has a "major" effect on the smooth running of such organisations.

It noted that not all finance executives are getting the most from their ERP software and examined ways to ensure they do.

Among the most effective uses of ERP technology include deploying it to gain full visibility over a financial set-up and to find opportunities to cut costs.

Another recent report by the Aberdeen Group found that wholesalers and distributors are among those who have most to gain from deploying ERP software.
