ERP software ‘is getting smarter’

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is changing over time to better suit the modern market and, in the opinion of one expert, is now "smarter" than before.

Independent consultant Christopher Baum, writing for Software Advice, explained that a number of developments have been made in technology that have helped ERP to progress.

For instance, he noted that extra computer power is now being used by shop-floor equipment rather than being taken by network servers and advances in battery life mean bosses have the option of taking their work with them wherever they go.

However, while the technology may be moving in the right direction, Mr Baum warned firms they can still get it wrong by making poor choices.

He advised companies to choose ERP software that matches their existing infrastructure, with the driving forces in small and large businesses said to be hugely different.

CIO Australia recently reported on a similar issue, noting that many firms down under adopted systems that are too large during the widespread take-up of ERP about a decade ago.
