The take-up of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software around the world may be gathering pace after leading provider SAP posted record-breaking financial results.

Following an initial review of its statistics for the fourth quarter of 2011, the company has confirmed the year was its best of all time.

New product releases and the increasing prominence of mobile solutions were cited as key factors behind its success, with revenue for the year rising to $3.97 billion (£2.59 billion).

Bill McDermott and Jim Hagemann Snabe, co-chief executive officers at SAP, said in a joint statement: "In an uncertain environment, SAP delivered the best year in its 40-year history. We gained significant market share and achieved double-digit growth across all regions."

Werner Brandt, chief financial officer at the firm, added that numerous "future growth opportunities" await SAP on the back of advancements made in 2011.

SAP recently outlined its plans for future expansion by confirming it is hoping to build a new research and development facility in Skolkovo, Russia.
