Businesses may invest more money in enterprise resource planning (ERP) platforms throughout 2010 as companies look to increase their investment in software.

This is according to new research by Gartner, which predicted that expenditure growth in software will be approximately 4.9 per cent over the next 12 months, in contrast with the 2.1 decline seen last year.

The organisation also estimated that the amount of money spent worldwide across IT will go up by 4.6 per cent.

Richard Gordon, research vice-president at the firm, said that while these statistics may seem "bullish", there are a number of reasons to support such rapid expansion.

He remarked: "Pent-up demand for new technologies will be released as enterprises focus on new growth opportunities and increase spending plans."

A recent study by CompTIA found that more small and medium-sized enterprises are beginning to take advantage of ERP benefits, with many programs - such as SAP Business One - able to drive costs down and boost client satisfaction.ADNFCR-2732-ID-19575567-ADNFCR
