Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software by SAP could be a hit with companies in the oil and gas market, if one of the manufacturer's chiefs is to be believed.

Stephan Klein, vice-president and head of services in oil and gas, metals and mining for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at SAP, said firms in these areas are known to appreciate innovation when it comes to IT solutions.

Speaking at the World Petroleum Congress in Doha, he went on to suggest SAP understands what those working with natural materials require from it.

"Whether it is the development and deployment of new assets or the efficient and sustainable operation of existing assets, IT can provide this clarity and enable the closed loop management of business performance," Mr Klein stated.

He added that now is the time to innovate and create solutions that will benefit the oil and gas sector.

Tim Stevenson, manager of the Henderson EuroTrust, recently penned a piece for the Financial Times in which he said it is SAP's ability to innovate that allows it to remain successful during periods of economic difficulty.
