ERP system implementation choice ‘is important’

Businesses looking to integrate enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems - such as SAP Business One - should take time to decide on what kind of implementation best suits their organisation.

This is according to Houston Neal, writing for the Software Advice blog, who noted that three types of development exist.

He said that companies can either choose a "big bang", "phased rollout" or "parallel adoption" route when purchasing new ERP systems.

As its name implies, Mr Neal stated, the first of these involves a single instance switch between legacy technology and freshly-purchased platforms.

This has the advantage of costing less and being more dynamic, he explained, however it also carries more risk should there be teething problems.

It is more common for corporations to pick either a phased option or a parallel adoption, the expert added, which involves gradually replacing older technology with the new product.

Harry Labana of Citrix recently predicted in an article for VMblog.com that many companies will turn to ERP systems in 2010 as a way to cut costs through automation.
