Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems need to incorporate a number of new features to attract firms in the current business environment.
This is according to Dale Vile, writing for the Register, who noted that organisations require increased flexibility from their platforms to ensure maximum productivity.
Managers who are looking to upgrade to a different package are now putting "much more emphasis" on software that is open, easy to monitor and is suitable for a wide range of potential users, he said.
Mr Vile added: "This includes both internal and external users with differing requirements and access needs (portal, mobile, extranet, internet etc)."
He went on to say that business intelligence and information analysis modules are also deemed important by corporations hoping to improve their performance.
Small and medium-sized enterprises considering upgrading their ERP system to streamline operations may be interested in SAP Business One, which is designed to simplify processes across multiple modules.
