Existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems may be more effective if they are re-integrated into the workplace.
This is the suggestion of Dale Vile, writing for the Register, who noted that businesses could be losing out on maximising the functionality of their platforms.
According to Mr Vile, many companies may be limiting the capabilities of their technology because they have built bespoke code over the years that is not relevant anymore.
"It is perfectly possible
that it’s those ten-year-old customisations and extensions that are holding you back, rather than the software per se," he added.
The specialist went on to say that re-implementing the existing platform - while using modern business functionality, "soft configuration" and open interfaces - can help firms to boost their future performance.
These views were recently echoed by president of LMA Consulting Group Lisa Anderson, who commented that enterprises should look to leverage the operating capacity of their present software.
