Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are able to streamline functions throughout every part of an organisation’s operations.
This is the suggestion of Ronnie Kidd, managing director for administration at the US city of Abilene, Texas, who told Government Computer News that implementing a new ERP system across the region caused improvements in a number of areas.
According to the news provider, officials updated their ageing equipment - which dated back to the late 1980s - with an integrated ERP platform.
Mr Kidd said: "This solution will provide tools to help us strengthen our budget and HR management processes, improve workforce retention and manage federal, state and private grand processes that can bolster our finances."
The ERP system also enhances security capabilities, he added, particularly in the HR department, where much of the network access control privileges fall.
Those considering an upgrade should make sure the project is planned efficiently, industry expert George Wing recently stated in a Baseline article, as this will help to establish best practice processes well in advance of deployment.
