Organisations that invest in enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems can experience a range of benefits by streamlining their current processes, one expert has claimed.
Writing for the Financial Times, principal research scientist at the Center for Digital Business at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Andrew McAfee said platforms of this kind have helped firms immensely since they became widely available in the mid 1990s.
"Research suggests these applications significantly boosted productivity and performance," he stated.
According to Mr McAfee, companies benefit from being able to structure their organisational charts and business procedures more effectively.
ERP systems enable enterprises to standardise their best practices and analyse large chucks of structured data easily, he added.
Readers were also advised that customer relationship management programs can help with processes such as these.
Data structuring will be an increasing focus of ERP technologies of the future, ComputerWorld contributor Thomas Whailgum commented last month, with new social media and mobile sources also being accounted for.
