ERP systems ‘can benefit manufacturing firms’

An enterprise resource planning (ERP) system could prove a useful acquisition for companies in the manufacturing industry, it has been suggested.

Writing for Printed Circuit Design & Fab, Jay Gorajia noted ERP systems can handle purchasing and order management, as well as planning functionality within the firms.

The journalist observed: “ERP provides the information on what needs to be built (work order), the quantity to be built and the parts to use (bill of materials, company-specific part numbered lists).”

A manufacturing organisation could also utilise the software to manage and organise stock levels, he explained.

Mr Gorajia stated the technology would ensure the correct amount is purchased, as well as make sure the products are successfully shipped to a customer and they in return are invoiced or billed for the goods.

The Wall Street Journal recently claimed small and medium-sized enterprises could use ERP systems to help maintain stocking levels and prevent overstocking.
