Companies that have installed an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, such as SAP Business One, should consider functions outside of just automation, one expert has suggested.

Writing for the Register, Dale Vile of Freeform Dynamics noted that while these platforms have traditionally been implemented for reasons such as this, they do offer much more.

He stated: "Firstly and most obviously, there is all that functionality embedded within applications that was not enabled during initial implementation but could be activated to deliver incremental value."

According to Mr Vile, reviewing the capabilities of an ERP system may enable firms to explore additional opportunities and quicken their return on investment.

Technology is currently drastically underutilised in many firms because they fail to realise the capabilities of their software, he added.

Last month, Mr Vile stated in the Register that ERP platforms were considered a "knight in shining armour" for many enterprises when they first arrived on the IT scene.
